Things to Know About Bilirubin Test

Bilirubin is a yellow-orange coloured substance produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. The liver takes it from the blood and changes its composition, so it can pass through the digestive tract before getting excreted out of the body. Higher-than-normal bilirubin levels in the body may be a sign of diverse types of liver or bile duct problems. A higher level of bilirubin is also a sign that the red blood cells are breaking down at a fast pace (hemolysis) or the liver is not functioning well to help clear out the extra bilirubin from the blood. A bilirubin test is done to evaluate the correct levels of bilirubin in the blood. Here is more to know about the bilirubin test.

Why is a Bilirubin Test Done?

Generally, a bilirubin test is a part of a group of tests done to check the liver health. Also, this test may be prescribed to:

  • Detect a liver disease, especially hepatitis, or monitor its progression

  • Check whether there is a blockage in the bile ducts

  • Monitor the efficiency of a treatment

  • Diagnose anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells

  • Check jaundice – yellowing of skin and eyes due to increased level of bilirubin

  • Test a person with drug toxicity or heavy alcohol consumption

The doctor may also order this test for people who have symptoms like:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Dark urine

  • Fatigue

  • Swelling and pain in the abdomen

  • Clay-colored stools

Test Procedure

It is a simple blood test where a small blood sample is taken from one of your arms using a small needle. You do not need any special preparation before getting the test done. However, if the blood samples are being tested for some other health issues at the same time, the person may need overnight fasting if instructed.

Test Results

If the blood test results show a high level of bilirubin, the doctor may prescribe additional tests to determine the exact cause. While a lower-than-normal bilirubin level is not a major issue, an abnormally increased level of this substance may indicate liver disease or damage.
